It has become very common now to set up wireless hotspots for security cameras so that the cameras can operate for free and offer internet access throughout your house. However, it’s actually very difficult to monitor a property via a wireless connection.
The Wyze Cam is a combination of a camera and motion sensor that’s small enough to mount on walls, ceilings, or even outside for better monitoring. It also comes with an optional battery pack that can be plugged in if your application calls for constant coverage. Wyze Cam is currently compatible with iPhone, iPad, and Android devices.
How to connect Wyze Cam to Mobile Hotspot
Let’s walk through the steps to connect your Wyze Cam to a Wi-Fi hotspot. The default Wi-Fi network name for Wyze Cams is “Wyze_XXXXXX” where you replace the X’s with the last 5 digits of your Cam’s serial number. To connect your Wyze Cam to a Wi-Fi hotspot, follow these steps:
Step 1: Update Firmware If you’re not using our latest firmware, update the Wyze Cam using a microSD card.
Download the latest firmware and put it on a microSD card. Insert the microSD card into your Wyze Cam and power it on. For more information about updating your Wyze Cam’s firmware, click here.
Step 2: Connect to Wi-Fi Hotspot Your Wyze Cam will automatically scan for Wi-Fi networks when you power it on, so if you’re home, it will likely find your home router first. If you’re not home, try a few other networks first. When your Cam finds your home router, add it to your phone or tablet’s Wi-Fi list by clicking the Wi-Fi icon and going to Settings > Connect to Network.
Step 3: Select a Wi-Fi Hotspot Your phone or tablet will automatically connect to the Wi-Fi designated for your Wyze Cam. You may want to change this if you share your hotspot with others.
Step 4: Visit the Wyze App Your Wyze Cam will automatically appear in the network selector after connecting. If it doesn’t, go to Settings > Network and check the Wi-Fi section. Open the app and tap “Connect” when prompted to connect to your Wyze Cam’s Wi-Fi.
Step 5: View Live Video Your Wyze Cam will immediately begin streaming live video! To stop streaming, tap “Disconnect” within the app. If your Wyze Cam needs additional setup, you can adjust the video resolution, turn off audio, change motion zones, and more. Scroll down to learn more about setup.
Can you connect Wyze Cam to a different Wi-Fi network?
If your Wyze Cam is already connected to Wi-Fi through another source (e.g., a hotspot), it will automatically switch over when that network is not present or available (e.g. if the hotspot runs out of data).
The best way to connect a Wyze camera to new Wi-Fi is to treat the situation as if you were installing a brand new Wyze camera. You should not remove any of the previous settings or attempt to modify your old Wyze Cam. Even though you are using the same device, when you set up a new Wi-Fi connection, treat it like a new device.
This scenario means that you need to follow the standard installation process for your Wyze Cam. If you connected to your camera a long time ago or forgot the steps, you’re in luck.
Remember that a Wyze Camera requires a power source (wall socket or USB port), a smartphone app from the App Store or Google Play Store, and an Internet connection. Since you already have a Wyze Camera, you already know the drill and probably already have the app.
Make sure your app is updated and if any firmware updates are available, do that too. Finally, let’s move on to the Wi-Fi setup for your Wyze cam. Here’s what to do.
Steps to Connect Wyze Cameras to New Wi-Fi:
- Launch the Wyze app on your Android or iPhone.
- Log in if you haven’t set the app to remember you.
- Connect your Wyze camera to the USB port or a wall outlet. Wait for it to flash yellow (about thirty seconds).
- Press and hold the “Setup” button on the back of the camera until you hear the automatic message “ready to connect”.
- Go back to the phone app and click on the ellipsis (three dots) in the top right corner of your screen. Tap “Add a product” and add your device with the correct name (Wyze Cam, Pan). The setup window appears. Follow the instructions and give it time if necessary.
- You will be prompted to choose a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and enter your password. Wyze Cams do not work on 5GHz networks, so keep that in mind. Connect to your new Wi-Fi with the current password.
- Then scan the QR code on the app with your Wyze Cam. When it scans the QR code, you will hear a voice command, ‘QR code scanner’. Tap the “I heard the voice command” button.
You can now choose a new label for your Wyze Cam using the device settings (gear icon) after selecting it from the device list. Just tap the name and enter a new one.
If you have more than one Wyze camera that you need to connect to a new Wi-Fi network, repeat these steps for each camera until you have them all set up. You can make further adjustments yourself by choosing motion and sound detection
